Ingredients
Scale
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
16 ounces sour cream, full fat, room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 45 minutes until the onions are deep golden brown and very soft. Do not rush this step; low and slow caramelization develops the flavor.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
In a medium bowl, combine the softened sour cream and cream cheese until smooth.
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture until evenly distributed.
Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve cold with chips, crackers, or raw vegetables.
Notes
For a thicker dip, drain excess liquid from the sour cream before mixing.
You can prepare the caramelized onions up to three days ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator.
If you want a warm dip, mix all ingredients and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes until heated through.
