Make a rich, creamy, and decadent hot chocolate from scratch using real chocolate on your stovetop. This recipe yields a velvety smooth drink perfect for cold weather.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk, heavy cream, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is steaming but not boiling.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for 2 minutes to soften.
  4. Whisk the mixture until the chocolate is completely melted and the drink is smooth and uniform.
  5. Return the saucepan to low heat and warm through for 1 minute, stirring often. Do not let it boil.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour immediately into mugs and serve.

Notes

  • For a thicker drink, reduce the milk slightly or add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold water before heating.
  • Top with fresh whipped cream or marshmallows for extra indulgence.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or cayenne pepper to the dry ingredients for a spiced flavor.
