Make tender, sweet blackberry dumplings cooked on the stovetop. This recipe delivers a warm, comforting dessert with juicy berries and soft biscuit dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, 1/2 cup of the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to release juice and the mixture thickens slightly, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low to keep warm.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  5. Drop the dumpling dough by rounded tablespoons directly onto the simmering berry mixture, leaving a small space between each piece.
  6. Cover the saucepan tightly, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and cook through.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of water to create a thin syrup.
  8. Gently pour the sugar syrup over the cooked dumplings. Cover and cook for 2 more minutes.
  9. Serve the dumplings warm with the thickened berry sauce.

Notes

  • For extra richness, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before adding them to the pot.
  • You can substitute half of the blackberries with raspberries or blueberries for a mixed berry flavor.
