Make rich, creamy chocolate milk from scratch using simple ingredients. This recipe uses cocoa powder for deep chocolate flavor and lets you control the sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar or sweetener (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small bowl or directly in your serving glass.
  2. Add about 2 tablespoons of the milk to the dry ingredients. Stir well until a smooth, thick paste (slurry) forms. This prevents lumps.
  3. Pour in the remaining milk and the vanilla extract.
  4. Stir or whisk vigorously until everything is fully combined and smooth.
  5. Taste the milk and add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a cold drink, or heat gently for a warm beverage.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, heat a small amount of milk first and dissolve the cocoa and sugar in it before adding the cold milk.
  • Use whole milk or a creamy non-dairy alternative like oat milk for the creamiest texture.
  • To make a quick syrup base ahead of time, mix the cocoa, sugar, and a tiny bit of hot water until dissolved, then store in the refrigerator.
