Make rich, creamy mashed sweet potatoes perfect for any holiday meal or weeknight dinner. This recipe includes simple steps for achieving a smooth texture and options for both sweet and savory flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional Sweet Addition: 2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup
  • Optional Savory Addition: 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon OR 1 clove roasted garlic, mashed

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and quartered sweet potatoes in a large pot. Cover them with cold water and add a pinch of salt.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook until the potatoes are very tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes completely. Return them to the hot, empty pot for one minute over low heat to dry out any excess moisture.
  4. Add the butter and heavy cream to the potatoes.
  5. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or an electric hand mixer until they reach your desired smooth consistency. For extra creaminess, whip them briefly with the mixer.
  6. Stir in the salt and pepper.
  7. If using sweet additions, mix in the brown sugar or maple syrup now. If using savory additions, mix in the cinnamon or the mashed roasted garlic.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving hot.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, use an electric hand mixer instead of a hand masher.
  • To make this recipe ahead of time, prepare it up to the final seasoning step, cool, cover, and refrigerate for up to two days. Reheat gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk or cream.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute half the cream with sour cream or cream cheese.
