Make soft and fluffy homemade naan bread on your stovetop without a tandoor. This recipe includes garlic butter for restaurant-style flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt or milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the warm water, yogurt, and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into an oval or teardrop shape, about 1/8 inch thick.
  6. Heat a dry cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until hot.
  7. Place one piece of rolled dough onto the hot skillet. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface and the underside is lightly browned.
  8. Flip the naan and cook the second side for another minute until browned spots appear.
  9. While the naan is hot, brush the top generously with a mixture of melted butter, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro.
  10. Remove from the skillet and repeat with the remaining dough pieces. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a softer naan, cover the cooked bread with a clean kitchen towel while you cook the rest.
  • If you do not have yogurt, substitute it with an equal amount of milk or water.
  • You can skip the garlic and cilantro for plain butter naan.
