Make authentic Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp, similar to those found at North Shore food trucks, featuring a rich, buttery garlic sauce with sweet and savory notes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 head garlic, minced (about 10 cloves)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup fresh pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or pan over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil.
  3. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 minutes, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  5. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet in a single layer if possible. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Do not overcook.
  6. Toss the shrimp thoroughly in the sauce to coat completely.
  7. Remove from heat. Garnish generously with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra tropical flavor, grill the shrimp skewers instead of pan-frying, basting frequently with the sauce during the last minute of cooking.
  • Serve immediately over hot white rice to soak up the extra sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the cooked shrimp and simmer the remaining sauce for an additional 2 minutes until it reduces slightly.
