Cook a tender and moist turkey breast using your slow cooker. This recipe includes a simple herb rub and instructions for a quick broiler finish to crisp the skin, plus a recipe for homemade gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (3 to 4 pound) boneless turkey breast, skin on
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • For Gravy: 1/4 cup reserved cooking liquid, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Pat the turkey breast dry with paper towels. Rub the entire surface with olive oil.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to create the rub. Sprinkle the rub evenly over the turkey breast, massaging it into the skin.
  3. Pour the chicken broth and water into the bottom of your slow cooker. Place the seasoned turkey breast on top of the liquid, skin side up.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours, or until an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit is reached in the thickest part of the breast.
  5. Carefully remove the turkey breast from the slow cooker and place it on a baking sheet. Tent loosely with foil and let it rest for 15 minutes. The internal temperature will rise to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. To crisp the skin, preheat your oven broiler to high. Place the baking sheet with the turkey under the broiler for 2 to 4 minutes, watching constantly until the skin is golden brown and crisp.
  7. While the turkey rests, make the gravy. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  8. Slowly whisk in 1/4 cup of the reserved cooking liquid from the slow cooker until smooth. Whisk in the milk or cream until the gravy thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Slice the turkey breast and serve immediately with the homemade gravy.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can place aromatics like halved onion, celery stalks, and fresh herb sprigs in the slow cooker around the turkey.
  • If you prefer not to use the broiler, you can skip step 5 and 6, but the skin will remain soft.
  • This recipe works well with boneless or bone-in turkey breast cuts. Adjust cooking time slightly for bone-in pieces.
