Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon dried onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
1 bag (about 28 ounces) frozen tater tots
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Cook the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
In a large bowl, mix the cooked beef and onion mixture with the cream of mushroom soup, milk, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until combined.
Spread the beef mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
Sprinkle half (1/2 cup) of the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese and beef mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
Return to the oven and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the tots are golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted.
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken soup.
If you prefer a tangier taste, mix 1/4 cup of sour cream into the soup mixture before spreading it in the dish.
You can assemble this casserole completely, cover it, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Add about 10 minutes to the initial bake time if cooking directly from the refrigerator.
